"Social Media Detox" Preview

In anticipation of what is yet to come in a few hours, here is a teaser of my book titled "Social Media Detox: The new luxury is being offline." Some of my readers are already curious and asking what this book entails for them. Besides reading this piece for mere relaxation pruposes, it also provides information and education on social media issues that, as individuals, would not only add to our knowledge hub, but also improve on our lives. Introduction:
Most of us wouldn’t acknowledge how much social media affects us because we hate to be separated from the only thing that seems to provide us with a way out of this world. We wake up each morning and the first thing we are most likely to do is to check for messages, tweets notifications and likes. We deceive ourselves about how much an effect social media has on us and yet when we don’t get as much likes as we would wish for on a post, we immediately delete it. We presume that the ones with the most likes are having more fun as compared to the one who had no like at all.
 
We live in a world where everyone claims to be busy with something meanwhile, more often than not, a lot of the so called busy times are rather spent on our phones either on Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Due to the frequency of the use of social media in our daily lives, we happen to downplay the effect its use may be having on us. Studies have shown that social media addictions are, in fact, real and shouldn’t be overlooked. Every time we are quick to check a notification, or scroll through feeds endlessly, we are gradually exposing ourselves to more and more of it which can be difficult to control in the long run.
 
Unconsciously, we are injected with a daily dose of likes, comments, followers and shares and we cannot imagine life without a dose of social media. While eating, we are sharing. Sometimes we turn on the television as if to watch and then we divert our attention back to our phones. The television rather ends up watching us scroll through posts, comments and news items. Gradually, we become addicted to these things unknowingly. How do you tell there is an addiction? Well, you know you are addicted to something when you cannot resist the urge to keep going back to that thing or when that thing has taken control over your life.
Note that it is not bad to have social media presence. It is not bad to want to have likes, comments and followers. In fact there is a good side to social media that we can explore. The only concern here is the addictive use of it. If you are giving so much attention to social media life to the extent that it has a negative effect on your real life, then perhaps you really need help or a diagnosis of some sort.

I, personally, decided to take a break from social media every now and then when I felt it was needful. There have been many times I felt even more depressed when I visited social media than when i was just home doing nothing. It was just impossible not to keep scrolling once I opened Instagram or Facebook. The only thing that stopped me from scrolling was if my battery died or when I was out of Wi-Fi range. It seemed almost impossible to resist the urge to reopen an app that I had just closed a few minutes ago.
My decision to take a "Social Media Detox" stemmed out from my inability to control this urge. The truth is even during the detoxification process; I was sometimes tempted to log into my social media accounts and just check a few things out. The only app I kept active was WhatsApp, partly due to work. I had to set usage limits to certain apps in order to tone the addiction level.

Many others, like me, are quick to open a social media app the first minute they wake up from bed. It’s either there is some unseen object controlling us or we are simply prisoners of social media. It really isn’t surprising anymore when I wake up in the middle of the night and I see that people have posted stuff on their pages or statuses as early as 2am. It only makes me wonder how much social media controls us behind the screens.

Being confined in a limited space over a period without exercising your thinking faculty can leave you dull and rusty over time. This has become a great concern for educators and heads of educational institutions hence, their dependence on the virtual learning possibilities which enables institutions reach out to their learners remotely during this school shutdown period. Seating And Sitting Arrangements In A Classroom

Back in the days when I was in Basic school, I’d always prefer to be seated either in front or in the middle of the class. The back seat or a seat by the window was a NO! NO! for me. I would flinch when my sitting position was changed. It usually did affect my behavior in class and also my general interest in school. But then, have we, as teachers or lecturers, really taken a consideration into seating and sitting arrangements in the classroom or anything goes?
